Is Drinking Coffee Good For Hair?


Coffee can be good for hair but taking too much can be bad for your overall health.

Many studies prove that caffeine in coffee is good at promoting hair growth. Caffeine blocks a hormone ('DHT') that caused hair loss and also increases blood circulation to the scalp which promotes healthy hair follicles.

    A 2018 study using 5 types of treatments on hair weights of rabbits show that coffee at various level (see Treatment 3 to 5). The remaining 2 are control treatments (positive hair tonic and negative ethanol).

Apply this paste to your hair and leave it for about 25 minutes before rinsing it off.

  • Coffee hair rinse can enhance hair color and texture. Brew coffee into boiling water. Let the mixture cool for some time. Wash your hair and use it as a final rinse for your hair. This trick will help to stop shedding and you will get smooth and silky hair. 

  • Speeds up the hair growth cycle
  • Caffeine has been proven to speed up the hair growth cycle. It does not only speed up the growth cycle, but it also increases the hair length from 33 to 40 percent. 

  • As Hair Oil
  • It is the most important benefit of coffee. It stimulates the blood circulation in the scalp as a result roots get stimulated as well. Coffee oil is rich in phytosterols that help in moisture retention and absorption. 

    How to make your own coffee oil?

    Take two cups of your favorite hair oil and add a quarter cup of roasted dark coffee beans into a pan. Make sure that the beans are darker as they will produce more benefits. Cover this mixture with the help of a lid and allow it to cook for 7 to 8 hours in low heat. To avoid it from burning, don’t forget to stir it after every hour. Now, turn off the heat and properly strain the mixture. 

    You can add essential oils that are helpful for hair growth into this coffee oil. Keep the mixture in a cool and dark place. You can use this oil on the scalp, along with shampoo or also with water for the final rinse. 

  • As Hair Dye
  • Another important benefit of coffee is it can be used as a hair dye. The caffeine present in coffee help to color the hair naturally. So, it can also be used as a hair dye for grey hair. 

  • It can act a conditioner
  • After taking shower and shampooing your hair, completely squeeze excess water from your hair. Now it’s time to pour brewed coffee into your hair. Keep pouring coffee into your hair until all the drippings stop. Let it sit for five minutes and then use your favorite conditioner and wrap your hair for about half an hour. It will allow all the ingredients to absorb. Rinse with lukewarm water first and then for the final rinse with cool water. Now you can style your hair according to your need. 

    Precautions before using coffee rinse

    Wait for the coffee to cool down completely. Then pour it to spray bottle and on your hair. It is advised not to apply hot coffee onto your hair otherwise you may end up burning your scalp. If you have light-colored hair, coffee can tint your hair. To enjoy the benefits of coffee try to use shampoo or conditioner that contains caffeine as one of their ingredients.
